Plateau South Senatorial race - Group drums support for Prof Nora Daduut

By Golok Nanmwa,Jos

Group in Plateau state operating under the aegis of Inspired Southern Zone Youths on Sunday drummed support for a female Professor of French Language at the University of Jos,  Nora Daduut  for the  forthcoming Plateau South Senatorial seat  .

Our correspondent report that  the seat became vacant following the  demise of the senator representing  the senatorial district at the National Assembly, Ignatius Longjan .

The group in a statement signed by Miss Angela Barde and made available to newsmen in Jos  reiterated that Prof Nora Daduut  stands out tall and deserves to represent the people at the Senate as she has done excellently well in the academia .

She disclosed that they are prepared to mobilize thousands of their supporters who are mostly youths and women from across the Plateau  South Senatorial District  especially as it has to do with their representation in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

"We have so much confidence for Prof Nora Dadduut ."

"We are so confident that she would provide quality representation  at the national Assembly if she is given the opportunity ."

The group also disclosed that one of the reasons they are prepared to follow Prof Nora  is that she is synonymous with excellence. “she  is not only a hard worker but a master planner whom observers believe stands a better chance with the growing strength and popularity of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state.

"Prof Nora  has  created a lot of landmark achievements in the academia ,and can be best described as an assurance to the people of Plateau south and if given the mandate would provide  quality representation, offering the desired change  as well as expand the network of her community through improved health care, education and wealth creation in rural communities thereby cutting down on the social and economic deprivations faced by the people."

“Our membership as a group  span across all the  local government area of the senatorial district, the group have mapped out plans to embark on massive grassroots rally to all the local government areas for Prof Nora .

They cited that their resolves to campaign for her  is based on her  antecedents in empowering the downtrodden  and her  achievements in the University .

The Group called on people of the zone to rally round Prof Nora and ensure she wins the primaries as well as the election .

Justice For Hon.Kelvin Pankshin

Justice for Hon.Kelvin Pankshin :

Thursday,June 4th ,2020

No doubt our security forces are doing a great job which we must commend on the Plateau and beyond, but just when we had thought we have had the last of it in respect to the unlawful molestation and brutality on innocent citizens by some security forces ,yesterday Hon. Kelvin Pankshin had  a terrible first hand experience with 4 STF solders at Zarmaganda junction around 3pm who where on bike, while he was driving on the pedestrian lane they ordered him to park, they said he was suppose to park when he sees them on the road which he did.

Hon.Kelvin Pankshin had government approved pass but his pass could not safe him as all plea fell on deaf ears, one of them then threatened to shoot him but he held the gun, they wounded him in the mouth hitting him with their guns and used their knife to puncture his tyre and then left with his car key.

In his quest for Justice Hon.Kelvin Pankshin came to formally lodge
a complain at the Operation Safe Haven Headquarters (OPSH) Jos,Plateau State accompanied by some journalist, bloggers and Plateau youth activist who want to see a harmonious relationship between the citizens and the military.

Although Hon.Kelvin Pankshin was not granted access to the Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) headquarters in Jos to lodge a formal complain as a law abiding citizen he will not be mute.

Citizens should feel safe and free when they see security forces around but not the other way round, for how long please would we be harassed, molested and humiliated by those who are suppose to guide us .

Where is the hope for the common man?

They way forward and the ban on inter-state travel .

Communities that have routes into the state which people use to smuggle goods and people into the state since the inception of the ban on travel into the State by the Governor of Plateau State Rt.Hon.Simon Bako Lalong should help the State by stopping those illegally coming into the State the Vigilante,Youths and the Community leaders need to own the process and to understand that no 1 is spared if those carrying the Corona Virus come into the State, but how will they own the process?
It is only by government reaching out to the Youths,Community & Youth leaders in those areas give them relevance explain to them why  they must guard all the entry points into the State.
They must understand that Government is not punishing anyone unduly but for public safety.

ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY, THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF PLATEAU STATE, RT. HON. (DR) SIMON BAKO LALONG, KSGG, ON THE CONTINUATION OF TOTAL LOCKDOWN OVER COVID-19 PANDEMIC, HELD ON 30TH  APRIL 2020.
1.  Dear citizens of Plateau State, you will recall that I addressed you on Thursday 23rd April 2020 to update you about our efforts in curtailing the Corona Virus disease otherwise known as COVID-19.

2.  In that address, I announced the relaxation of the total lockdown from Midnight of Thursday 23rd April 2020 to 12th Midnight of Sunday 26th April 2020 to enable people again re-stock their homes. Accordingly, the total lockdown resumed this Monday 27th April 2020.
3.  As you are aware, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in Plateau State on 23rd April 2020. Immediately this development was conveyed, Government activated its response mechanisms to treat the patient who was already on isolation.

4.  Thereafter, health officials began contact tracing towards halting further spread and infection. This has largely been carried out with 19 contacts traced and isolated while the index case remains in isolation for treatment and is in good condition.

5.  Fortunately, the results of all the 19 contacts associated with the index case have been received and all of them are negative.

6.  Regrettably, the Government discovered the unfortunate leakage of a test result conducted at the COVID-19 Laboratory of the National Veterinary Research Institute Vom, which found its way to the social media.

7.  This unprofessional conduct is being investigated thoroughly and anyone found culpable will be dealt with accordingly. We have equally reached out to the affected persons and their families to reassure them and mitigate the situation.

8.  Having received report of a suspected case in Enugu State said to have travelled to Plateau recently, we have since identified the contacts associated with the person and 12 people who might have had contact with the index case have been put on isolation and their samples taken. Results are being awaited.

9.  In addition to this, the results of other suspected cases are being awaited, while the results of 65 other suspected cases earlier sent for investigation were received today, which all returned negative.

10.                Dear compatriots, with the COVID-19 index case confirmed in Plateau State, we certainly have to redouble our efforts at combating the pandemic by cutting off community transmission and blocking more imported cases.

11.                The only way we can do this is to encourage and sustain preventive measures, which cannot succeed with stigmatization and discrimination. Like I have said repeatedly, Corona Virus is not a death sentence and scientific evidence suggests that there is high survival rate among those infected.

12.                I appeal to citizens to avoid stigmatizing people who are either quarantined, suspected or confirmed to have the disease. While we take all necessary measure to remain safe, we must not subject people to psychological torture, which has devastating effects on their health and capable of discouraging future tests.

13.                Further to the efforts at combating COVID-19, Government has taken the following decisions:
i.               The total lockdown which resumed midnight Sunday April 26th 2020, shall be relaxed from Midnight of Thursday 30th April 2020 to  Midnight of Sunday 3rd May 2020 to enable people again re-stock their homes. Thereafter, the total lockdown will resume on Monday 4th May 2020.

ii.            This will henceforth be the pattern until further review. In order words, the period of restocking will last from Midnight of every Thursday to Midnight of every Sunday.

iii.          In addition to the total lockdown which closed movement in and out of the State, and in order to curb community spread of COVID-19, Government has decided to close all intra-State borders with effect from 4th May 2020. Consequently, there shall be no movement from one Local Government to another even during the period when the total lockdown is relaxed, except for those on essential services as earlier enumerated.
iv.          Farmers are strongly advised to farm within their localities and Local Government Areas to avoid breaking this order. These measures are necessary in order to curb community transmission of the disease and make contact tracing easier.

v.            The profiling and return of Almajiris has commenced and shall continue until the last Almajiri is relocated. On 26th April 2020, the first batch of 279 Almajiris were evacuated. Out of this number, 243 were sent home to their States of Bauchi, Kano and Kaduna, while 36 were sent to their Local Governments in Wase and Kanam.

vi.          Starting from 4th May 2020, all citizens shall be required to use facemasks in public places in addition to observing all hygiene and social distancing regulations.

vii.       In line with the Mr. President’s pronouncement, there shall be overnight curfew from 8pm to 6am effective 4th May 202. Only people on essential duties are exempted from this directive.

14.                Fellow compatriots, the Government remains fully aware of the collective hardship that this situation has brought upon us. No one, including those holding public offices are immune from these challenges. That is why we must exercise more patience and resilience as we work together to defeat this pandemic.

15.                Already, the measures put in place to reduce the hardship among the most vulnerable have commenced with the distribution of palliatives to orphanages, people living with disabilities, and the elderly, which kicked off on Saturday 25th April. This exercise will continue with other groups up to all the Local Government Areas.

16.                While Government is doing everything possible to expand the number of beneficiaries, members of the public, especially those who have the means are strongly encouraged to also initiate personal interventions by reaching out to the needy within their communities.

17.                We should also avoid spreading fake rumours and unsubstantiated information about palliatives, which is capable of misleading the public and putting them under unnecessary tension at this very sensitive time. Those who are in this habit are hereby warned to desist, as they will be held responsible for their actions.
18.                The Deputy Governor who chairs the palliative committee and his team are working assiduously to ensure that this distribution is carried out in a transparent, equitable and successful manner. I have confidence in their capacity to deliver and they need our support and prayers.

19.                There will be no discrimination of any kind in this exercise. Nevertheless, members of the public are free to report any case of abuses directly to the Deputy Governor or myself for immediate action.

20.                Government is also concerned about the impact of the Corona Virus pandemic on the education sector. That is why I directed the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board to commence the implementation of the UNICEF EDUCATION CAN NOT WAIT INTIATIVE (ECW) to enable our children learn at home.

21.                At the moment, learning has started with Television and Radio lessons for children in Mathematics and English transmitted on the Plateau Radio Television Corporation from 9-11am weekdays. In addition, we have produced simplified study materials that are being distributed to children especially in rural areas that may not access Radio and Television services.

22.                In addition, Government is partnering with U-LESSON Education, one of the new Education Technology Company in Nigeria founded by one of the illustrious sons of Plateau State, Mr. Sim Shagaya that will offer online science education to secondary school students.

23.                Let me reiterate that the breaches in our inter-State borders remain a major challenge to our efforts at combating the virus. With the ban on non-essential inter-State passenger travel by the President, it has become imperative that more radical measures be put in place to curb illegal infiltrations of our borders.

24.                We are strategizing and re-inforcing the borders especially illegal routes. It is important to warn that stiffer penalties and actions will be applied to violators no matter their Status.

25.                Those who aid and abet this illegality, including Government functionaries should be ready to face the full wrath of the law. I also remind the public that all guidelines earlier issued remain in force as the mobile courts are on duty to try offenders.

26.                Finally, I wish to register my appreciation to the entire citizens of the State who have shown tremendous understanding and commitment to supporting our administration in responding to the Corona Virus pandemic.

27.                You have demonstrated that it is our battle which we must all fight together. God willing, we will surely win.

28.                Thank you and may God bless Plateau State, God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Rt. Hon. (Dr) Simon Bako Lalong, KSGG
Executive Governor, Plateau State & Chairman,

Lukwa Wukwa speaks on Mining and the way forward for Plateau State, post COVID-19.

Mining can help change Plateau State  economic outlook after Covid-19.

Plateau- The minerals Hub of Nigeria, could be critical and effective in helping to boost economic recovery after the Nation emerges from the Covid-19 crisis.

The state would be required to pass a set of constructive economic reforms to improve its financial performance and productivity.

These measures are also going to be critical for achieving previously set targets given by the BCG groups to reduce poverty and unemployment. Unfortunately, the only way Plateau state can return to a reasonable investment grade will be through significant economic restructuring, especially boosting the need for whare-housing our Mineral's.

Plateau State  is currently under a lockdown. The lockdown, which has brought economic activity to a halt, was imposed by government to curb the spread of the   coronavirus.

We believe that the lockdown could have a positive effect on metal prices in the longer term. It is forecast that Lead and Zinc ore will benefit most from the current situation.

The lockdown will particularly benefit those producers who are able to keep a sizeable proportion of operations functional due to heavily automated processes and successful implementation of new technologies.

Tin ore will similarly benefit from the current situation, given that Plateau State is one of the largest producers of Metallic ores and Gemstones predominantly White Topaz. Whilst Chinese demand is slowly recovering as the country is exiting its Covid-19 crisis phase.

Furthermore, the interest in bulk commodities has remained relatively high despite global quarantine measures being rolled out across some of the world’s largest economies. Kindly put your ears to the ground as we unveil more strategies on improving our economy even in the face of this global challenge. Luka Wukwa

TEXT OF BROADCAST BY HIS EXCELLENCY,RT.HON (DR)SIMON BAKO LALONG.

TEXT OF BROADCAST BY HIS EXCELLENCY, RT. HON. (DR) SIMON BAKO LALONG, EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF PLATEAU STATE, TO THE CITIZENS OF PLATEAU STATE ON THE CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19) PANDEMIC DELIVERED ON 24TH MARCH 2020.
1. My dear citizens of Plateau State, it has become necessary to address you on the global health challenge that we are facing today which is the Corona Virus pandemic otherwise known as COVID-19.
2. It is no longer news that this disease is a threat not only to human existence, but also to the global economy. For these reasons, all hands must be on deck to fight it and ensure that people are protected from its deadly impact.
3. Our administration has remained proactive in responding to the pandemic and also liaising closely with the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to tackle the disease.
4. You will recall that when we received information about some Chinese nationals who arrived Wase Local Government Area after the outbreak of the disease in their country, I immediately directed the Commissioner of Health to deploy experts to investigate.
5. Fortunately, the results came out negative after their period of quarantine and observation, leaving the State with no case of Corona Virus disease to this day. We have continued our surveillance to ensure that any suspected case is identified and addressed appropriately.
6. In addition, we also activated our Public Health Emergency Operation Centre to enhance our monitoring capacity and ability to receive up-to-date information from all the 17 Local Government Areas.
7. With more cases recorded in Nigeria and based on advice of experts, I directed the closure of all schools from pre-primary to tertiary level in the State from Saturday 21st March 2020.
8. Afterwards, we organised a critical enlightenment session with key stakeholders such as religious, traditional and community leaders, civil society, non-governmental organisations as well as health experts, which was chaired by His Excellency, Prof. Sonni Tyoden, Deputy Governor of Plateau State.
9. Thereafter, Government directed all worship centres to reduce congregation to not more than 50 persons with a 2-metre spacing interval as well as provide running water and soap for handwashing and sanitizers at their entrances.
10. We also directed that all funerals, weddings and other social events should have only family members and relations not exceeding 50 people in attendance, while cultural festivals and anniversaries were suspended until further notice.
11. All these precautionary measures were aimed at safeguarding the possible occurrence of the disease in the State. Government appreciates responsible citizens who complied with the directives and commend their sense of duty and patriotism.
12. However, we have noted with dismay the flagrant disregard and disrespect to this directive by some individuals and groups including religious institutions who did not only flout the order, but also dissuaded their followers from abiding by it.
13. Of particular note is the non-compliance to the outright suspension of anniversaries and cultural festivals as well as inability of some schools to close as directed. This is rather unfortunate.
14. Government views this as an attempt not only to test its resolve, but also endanger public safety and risk the lives of innocent citizens. Let me make it categorically clear that such actions will no longer be tolerated.
15. Arising from an Emergency Meeting of the State Executive Council, further measures have been taken. With effect from Wednesday 25th March 2020, all public servants in Plateau State from Grade levels 12 and below are to work from home for the next 30 days.
16. Only workers offering essential services such as security, health, media, street cleaners and water supply and energy are exempted from this directive.
17. In view of the crowds associated with markets, government is directing all markets to close effective 25th March 2020. Only traders selling food items, pharmaceuticals and cooking gas are to remain open. In addition, all street trading, street hawking, and begging are prohibited. The weekly Sunday markets at Ahmadu Bello Way, Bukuru and environs are hereby banned.
18. Social joints, Nightclubs, drinking parlours are to also close effective Wednesday 25th March 2020, while restaurants are advised to prepare take away for their customers to avoid crowding.
19. Motor parks are to capture and keep data including contacts of all inbound and outbound passengers as well as adhere strictly to social distancing and mass gathering prohibition order as well as hygiene regulations. Henceforth, all entry points into Plateau State by land and air will be subjected to preliminary tests.
20. The weekly State Executive Council Meetings are hereby suspended indefinitely. However, Council will continue to consult and meet through digital means.
21. I have directed security agencies to begin enforcement and anyone found violating these orders should be arrested. Should the situation continue this way, we shall not hesitate to impose a complete lockdown in order to save the lives of our people.
22. To ensure total compliance, Government has set up a Task Force on Enforcement and Monitoring, which will be personally chaired by me to coordinate, evaluate and review developments on the disease in the State. The Task Force will also give updates to citizens from time to time.
23. My dear citizens, just yesterday, I undertook an inspection visit to the isolation facilities in the State located at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Plateau Specialist Hospital, and Bingham University Teaching Hospital.
24. From what we have on ground, I am satisfied that we are reasonably prepared to respond to any eventuality. However, the few challenges observed are being addressed as I have directed the immediate purchase of additional ventilators and other consumables for the three Isolation Centres.
25. In addition to this, government is setting up additional isolation centres in the Old JUTH, Pankshin and Shendam General Hospitals.
26. While our prayer and determination is not to record any Corona Virus disease case in Plateau State, we are not oblivious of the national incidences. This calls for more vigilance, sensitization and preventive measures.
27. I have therefore directed that more sensitization jingles and information materials should be produced and disseminated across all communication channels including the social media to reach people at the grassroots.
28. Dear citizens of Plateau State, you may have been following the impact of the Corona Virus disease on the global economy. Nigeria is not isolated and has already been heavily impacted because of the crashing oil prices on the international market.

29. Already, the Federal Budget has been slashed by N1.5 Trillion naira in line with the reality of the times. This comes with consequences for other tiers of Government. Expectedly, revenue accruing to Plateau State from the Federation Account has fallen drastically by over 51 percent.
30. Accordingly, we must brace up for the harsh economic realities and be ready to make necessary sacrifices in the coming weeks and months. Therefore many development projects and programmes will have to be reviewed in accordance to the emerging realities.
31. For the avoidance of doubt, recurrent expenditure other than salaries and pensions will be cut by 40 percent; the processes of fresh employment; implementation of the new minimum wage; funding of on-going projects among others, will be affected in the interim. Similarly, all allowances of political office holders are hereby slashed by 50 percent.
32. These decisions were painstakingly arrived at by the State Executive Council on the strength of the advice of the State Economic Advisory Council. We shall therefore appreciate the understanding of all and sundry in this difficult period, pending when we put this situation behind us.
33. My dear people of Plateau State, this period is one that we must face with optimism, prayers, and above all caution and pre-caution. With what we see around the world especially in countries with higher standards of living, our best chance as a developing nation is prevention.
34. Therefore, I strongly advise all our citizens and visitors coming into Plateau State who recently returned from overseas or know that they have had contact with any of the confirmed cases in the country to self-isolate for 14 days.
35. In the event that they exhibit any symptoms such as cough, fever, and difficulty in breathing, they should immediately call the following emergency toll free numbers to report:
0703-286-4444;
0803-542-2711
0806-548-6416
0803-577-9917.
These emergency numbers will be repeatedly announced in different mass media platforms.
36. We should also avoid unnecessary movement. People should as much as possible stay at home and only move around when it is absolutely necessary. In the coming days, we shall unveil further movement restrictions as the situation demands.
37. Markets, Motor Parks, Hotels, Super Markets and restaurants are to strictly adhere to the guidelines for social distancing while providing running water, soap and sanitizers for customers at their entrances.
38. Finally, I urge you all to avoid panic and the spread of fake news and unverified information, which has the tendency to do more damage than the disease itself.
39. Working together and with God Almighty on our side, we can overcome this challenge and face the future with greater prospect. As a people of faith, Let us therefore intensify our prayers to God and not succumb to fear.
40. God bless Plateau State, God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
41. Thank you.

must be fished out immediately.

The Governor who addressed the stakeholders at the Government
House, Little Rayfield-Jos expressed anger over the incident which he said will
not be allowed to degenerate further and make nonsense of the efforts put in to
restore peace to the state, insisting that nobody is above Government.

He said “how can they say that people are killed and there is
no arrest. Are those killing others spirits? I don’t think you can kill 15 human
beings and claim you are spirit and there is not arrest. Commissioner of
Police, you should take the community leaders and the Ardos with you so that
they can tell you those behind these killings. By the time you go to cell, you
will bring out those people that are doing it. If you want to give evidence,
give it to the commissioner of police. We are not afraid of criminals.”

“Some community leaders and Ardos have done their best but
within us, there are criminals. We must expose them no matter how high. If you
are one of them, you better take yourself to the police station. The Army is
here, Police, Civil Defence, DSS, Operation Rainbow. I want those people today.
They should not sleep in their houses. By the time they are arrested, we will
solve this problem”. The Governor said.

Commissioner of Police in Plateau State Isaac Akimoyede
earlier briefed the Governor on the crises and the efforts to contain it explaining
that he had held a meeting with the community leaders last Saturday based on
intelligence where he warned against any breach of the peace.

“Since I have been in the state since February, no event of
this magnitude have happened. We have been investigating the incident in Mangun
and then this. We cannot continue in this situation in the State. The security
agencies have resolved that those people killing must be arrested no matter how
highly placed. Peace must return to this state as we cannot continue in this
situation. If anyone has grievances, he should come up and say it so that we
can find solution, not to take the laws into his hand and kill. We will not
allow it” the CP said.

He assured the Governor that the security personnel have been
deployed in the troubled areas to forestall any spread of the crises beyond the
initial areas.

PRESS STATEMENT FROM PIDAN: calls for urgent steps .

PRESS STATEMENT FROM PIDAN

The Plateau Initiative for Development and Advancement of the Natives, PIDAN, is saddened by the recent brutal killings  of its citizens within and outside the State by organised terrorist groups.
At the time we are still in pains over the killings in Kulben and the gruesome murder of Ropvil Daciya Dalep,  the State was thrown into more agonies on Sunday January 26, 2020, when some yet to be identified persons invaded Kwatas in Bokkos Local Government Area and unleashed terror on the peaceful community, leaving about 10 deaths and a scores with injuries.
We condemn the killing of innocent citizens of the State in such gruesome manner and pray that the almighty God will comfort the bereaved and grant the families the fortitude to bear the loss.

The serial events of killings on the Plateau in recent times call for serious concern and clarion call to both the State and the Federal Government to rise  up to the occasion by strengthening the security  architecture to protect the lives of innocent citizens.

We also wish to further call on the Plateau State Government to create the enabling environment that would enable communities to engage in effective community policing in all parts of the State.
We consider the gruesome murder of one of our sons Ropvil Daciya Dalep by the terrorist group -Boko Haram, as terrible,  shocking  and condemnable. We wish to commiserate with  the immediate family and the Mupun Community,  and pray God to comfort them.
We consider the present operations of the Boko Haram as strategic attempts to reignite religious violence in the country and government most not allow them to overwhelm it by this brutality on Nigeria and its people.

We therefore call on Federal Government to take urgent steps to secure lives and properties of Nigerians wherever they are and secure the release of all those who are still under the captivity of these insurgents as an immediate responsibility.
We appeal to the Christian and Moslem communities to collaborate in their various communities to flush out undesirable elements within their mist and bring them to justice.

We pray that God will grant the souls of departed eternal rest.
